| The organ in St Thomas' church Hanwell is arguably the finest in the area. It was built in 1897 and moved to St Thomas' when the church was opened in the 1930s. The specification makes it ideal for accompaning hymns and other church music, and it's also got the potential to be a fine recital instrument. But it needs overhauling, a task that will cost over £100,000. The purpose of this site is to let you know what's going on at St. Thomas to raise the funds, to give you the chance to get involved if you want, and above all to let you find out about our church. |
The organ was built by Walker & Sons in 1897. It was installed in St Thomas when the church was dedicated in 1934. The opening recital was given by Harry Goss Custard of Liverpool Cathedral. The horseshoe console is very unusual and perhaps is a nod in the direction of Walker's work at that time with cinema organs. |
